Edinburgh, Gigs and BBQ’s
May 29, 2007
Starting from a week ago; on Tuesday Sam, Jenn and I went up to Edinburgh for the day, to check out an exhibition at the national portrait gallery. It was a series of portraits of the Scottish police forces, and it was pretty rubbish, very boring. But we had a good day anyway..
Jenn on the bus up…
After lunch in a pub called ‘Dirty Dick’s’. Sam with my lens hood. ART.
Then Sam bought some fancy ice cream from Thornton’s. He was the envy of us all.
Then I finished off a really boring and crappy roll of tri-x on my shoes, despite being surrounded by nice things to look at.
Then, I started a roll of superia 400 on my shoes. This was outside some ‘vision experience’ museum thing, but it was way expensive, so we didn’t go in.
I couldn’t be bothered trying to fix the colours on these frames, so just imaginethe sun was purple that day. This is Jenn looking into a distorted mirror, like you’d find at a carnival.
Edinburgh has lots of lovely, typically scottish things for sale. This man moved at the last second, so forgive the composition. There were lots of americans walking around this area.
Sam had to leave to go home, so me and Jenn went for a fairly long walk, where we kinda got lost for a few minutes. Once we saw the castle, we were fine though. I was born in Edinburgh, but only know parts of the city well. We went to pizza hut for dinner as we were both skint. We ordered a single coke for drinks, and used the free refils and free water to our advantage. We vowed to make up for this one day. Then we went home on the bus and watched episodes of scrubs on my iPod.
The next day involved walking about town and the west end for a while. The subway smelled really bad.
That night, Ryan and I went to see Kill Keneda at the Barfly. I had been waiting to see them play for years, as the last time they were meant to play Glasgow, they had to pull out at the last minute. They were awesome, but the venue was pretty empty, which was a shame. I bought a tee-shirt at the end, which is too big for me.
The next night, we went to see Apples in Stereo at King Tut’s. They were really good. It would be nice if my scanner could even attempt to scan blacks, but oh well. Will print this soon I think.
The next night, I went to a bbq party at Fran’s house after i got off work. A lot of my old friends from Uni were there – they were celebrating finishing Uni (I finished last year without doing the Hons year). There was a paddling pool in his garden. Got a cool series of shots, I reckon… (Delta 400 +1 developed in HC-110)
I can’t remember this guy’s name, but he was very cold.
Sam and Thomas.
Marcus. Marcus got a job in Oxford, and will be moving down there in a few days.
We sat around, drank cheap wine (£4 for 4 litres is tough to beat) while Thomas entertained us with stories.
I’m not sure what was funny, but if it’s coming from a drunk Marcus wearing a sailor’s hat, then it’s probably going to be.
Kinda wish this wasn’t blurry, but I like it anyway.
While some slept/passed out, others talked and played bad music loudly.
Sam + cam.
Some people tried to put make-up on him, but gave up and just put the hat over his face instead. I ran out of film here, at the end of the night, but had a digital camera with me too for some random shots throughout the night…
A pounder burger – 4 badly cooked quarter pounders in the one bun. Despite being very drunk, he actually managed to eat all of that. On camera flash of the 350D worked quite well here.
Sam again.
We went to see modest mouse on saturday night, but as that venue doens’t allow cameras in, and as I couldn’t be bothered smuggling one in, there are no shots from it, I’m afraid. Good gig though – will be seeing Silversun Pickups and Sparklehorse in the coming week.
I’ve decided to shoot delta400+1 over tri-x+1 as my usual film for now, I was getting really contrasty negs from the tri-x for some reason – possibly overdeveloping – the water in the college processing is unreliable in temperature, and usually sits at about 24 degrees. Delta 400 seems to handle this better.

Parties, and some street.

OK, as previously noted, I discovered that Tesco process colour film for 99p a roll. This is cheap. True, they do scratch most of it but I’m very poor at the moment. Anyway, just a few shots from the 7 or so rolls I got processed the other day to start with. Shot on superia 400 and jessops diamond 400. Yeah, shut up. Some of this stuff is months old, some of it weeks old.
From way back in October. YELLOW
Then some party shots from november/december time at Jonathan’s house.
To anyone who cares about correct colour balance: sorry.
All our parties tend to end up something like this.
Next, from a day out at the park.
Who needs a mirror when you have a digital camera! (This was jessops diamond film underexposed 2 stops. Yum.)
Matt, looking grainy. My scanner went a bit wonky here.
Now, some from a few weeks back, when we went to Loch Lomond. I’ve already posted some black and white shots, in the first entry on this here blog, in fact, but I present you these shots, in 21st century colour.
Chris, looking angry/happy.
A basketball court where we played frisbee.
Conversations.
Eating lunch with my dad in Oran Mor, a few days after dislocating my knee cap.
Housebound, leg in a splint, after shopping for new smart shoes. Trying on shoes while wearing a splint/crutches isn’t much fun, lemme tell you.
At my aunt’s house after a meal.
Now, onto some recent b+w. Shot on APX100. Mostly from yesterday, while walking around with Niall. But starting with some from the day before, as well.
Sam, and a Pentax. I am going to cry when I run out of APX100. For a similar shot taken on digital, take a peek at the last shot in the entry before this one.
We are so mischevious!
Jenn’s new flat, before we brought all her stuff in. I like this shot, but kinda wish someone had been in it. Oh well, the light is nice.
Shopping for new stuff in IKEA. ( not apx, obviously
)
There are two cats here: scootercat is easy to find, but where is the other?!
Scootercat is awesome.
Texting in an alley.
Just after telling Niall that the ball spins when you push it. Well, it used to. It was fun, but now it is broken.
Down at some new fancy city centre apartment building.
This shot didn’t really come out very well, at all.
Now, for some tri-x+1. Just some random shots. They all seem quite ‘lonely’ though. [/emo]
More texting.
Product sampling on Sauchihall Street. Crappy composition, eh?
In KFC. Just after I bit my cheek REALLY hard while eating. Serves me right for eating there, I guess.
At night, Ryan and I went to see Do Make Say Think at the Admiral Bar. Lots of waiting around, and then lots of confusion with audio setting up on stage, so half the band couldn’t hear anything, but eventually they just decided to play. They were awesome, it was a great show. Again, my scanner went kinda bad here, and decided to make everything mega grainy – sorry.
Also, apologies again for finishing on a crappy shot. I ran out of film and decided to go for a flash shot – this was at the very end of the gig, the guy in the purple was wasted and was falling about everywhere, yet managed to play some great guitar.
