Coast to Coast
March 30, 2008
The title may or may not be a not-very-subliminal message to get you to listen to more Elliott Smith. But anyway, the last week has seen me on both coasts, the cold, grey and windy west, and the cold, grey and windy east. And also inbetween. I finally got a 35/2 EF lens this week, which is great, because i was getting really sick of a max aperature of f3.5 on that 28-80 lens. Also, this lens is a lot smaller, and isn’t a freaking zoom.
On monday, 6 of us drove down to Ayr for the day, and we experienced hail, bright sunshine, rain, winds and snow all in a few hours, it was annoying.
Getting ready to walk down to the ruined castle on the cliff, we stood around Jonathan’s car for a while. Colour! I should probably start shooting more colour photos with the 5D.
Jenn, taking my photo inside the castle. It’s the second time I’ve been there, but it’s still pretty weird- you have to climb up a really steep hill/cliff on the beach with a sheer drop on one side, then climb through a hole thats been punched through a bricked up wall…i think people party and squat in there, so going into a really dark room which might have people in it is a bit scary. But fun! Then, to get to the floor above, you have to either climb up a wall, or use a broken stone spiral staicase and a rope which hangs down.
Graham, at the bottom of those stairs.
Sam and some nice light.
Now, getting back down is sometimes the tricky part..
Using the tried and tested Glaswegian ‘dreepy doon’ method.
Will be nice for a fashion shoot someday.
Dead seagull.
So yeah, all that stuff was shot mainly with the 28-80, or the 50/1.8. Here’s the 35/2, starting with Scott at the end of another shift at work.
Sam last night, at the first of two fairly strange house parties. I didn’t know anyone at the first party, apart from those I came with.
Grant and Jenn in their living room.
Grant, at lunch at Walkabout..an Australian themed pub in the city centre.
Apparently the cream tasted bad. I ate mine too quickly to notice, haha.
A boring frame which pleases my eye.
I decided to apply my last colour balance settings to a b/w file, and I liked it, so there.
I laughed out loud in Sainsbury’s when I read this headline, what a stupid newspaper..
My feet on the top floor of a car park.
We drove to Loch Lomond today, for some reason. And stayed for about 20 minutes. I <3 daylight saving. Note what a good job I did on the horizon line here, oh yeahhhh.
And to finish; a swan and a beer can. Yep.
So that’s been most of my week. I’m pretty sure I have another memory card somewhere with photos from tuesday on it, but I have no idea where it is. If i find it, ill post whats on it.
Still enjoying digital!

All over Glasgow
March 22, 2008
The last two weeks have been fun; taking photos, hanging out with people and not being in college due to strike action. Here are some photos.
Sam, in Coopers. Wearing Thomas’ hat.
Thomas was flying to South Africa the next day.
The next day, we decided to visit the Cathedral.
Mucking around outside.
Still using the old 28-80mm at the moment. It vignettes quite a bit.
I took some photos inside, but they’re boring. Unlike shots where people are walking in time, right?
My mum.
My cousin.
After last weeks game of basketball.
Killing time in the west end.
Jenn’s kitchen.
The next day, 5 of us went to Chatelherault park. Here is Jenn at f2, 50ISO – a combination which I have been enjoying recently.
And again. Yep.
And Sam too.
I was walking around the city, taking pictures, when I met this man. He was pretty much out of it, but a nice guy. I’ve kinda carried on my way of shooting from shooting film…I only shot 3 frames of him. I think this is a good thing…?
Leather district.
On wednesday, we went swimming, and then drove down to Kilmarnock for the sole purpose of eating at a restaurant we found there a few months ago. It had been taken over by a new company, and was closed. So we drove around, and ended up in Troon.
Back in Glasgow the next day, Sam and I were on our way to buy be your own PET tickets for their gig that night, when we met Suzie.
During a conversation about access to the immacon scanner at college.
Suzie.
Gang signs in the bathroom at our favourite pizzzzza place.
That’s it for now, thanks for reading..!
